Yeshua is the long-awaited Messiah spoken of in the Old Testament Scriptures, which are called the Torah by the Jews. When Yeshua came, He fulfilled nearly all the prophecies told about Him—except those that refer to His Second Coming, an event that is still in the future.
For instance, early in Yeshua’s ministry, He was asked to read from the Scriptures in the synagogue of Nazareth, His hometown. He got up to read and was handed the scroll of Isaiah. According to Luke 4, “He opened the book, and found the place where it is written:
‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
Luke 4:17=19
Because He has anointed Me
To preach the gospel to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives
And recovery of sight to the blind,
To set at liberty those who are oppressed;
To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.’
At this point He closed the book and sat down, and then announced, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” (Luke 4:21) And indeed, Yeshua fulfilled all the marvelous things mentioned in that passage. But note where He closed the book of Isaiah. What was the next verse? It was, in fact, the second part of Isaiah Chapter 61, verse 2:
“And the day of the vengeance of our God.”
Isaiah 61:2
Yeshua closed the book because the second half of that verse would not be fulfilled until He came again as the Conquering King to judge the living and the dead.
Many people choose to follow Christ without even understanding all the Old Testament Scriptures He fulfilled. But the more you understand who Yeshua really is, and how He is, indeed, the promised Messiah, the more you will be in awe of our Lord of Glory.
